GIAC Exam Challenge is for subject matter experts to achieve Silver Certification separately from SANS training. You do not receive access to any course materials. If you wish to purchase course materials please see the SANS Self Study program. Challenge Certifications are the same certifications available with SANS conference or self-study training, but without the training or access to course materials. When you register for a Challenge Certification, you will receive access to the certification exam. With registration for full certifications, you will also receive two practice exams. Registrations for STAR DO NOT include practice tests. You do not receive access to any course materials.

Both SANS Self Study and GIAC Challenge Certification applications are subject to approval and this may cause a slight delay in availability of the products. You will be asked to summarize your security related work experience and network security training when you register.
During the course and exam development process, GIAC certifications are available only in conjunction with SANS courses while the exam process is refined. Once that quality assurance process is complete, the certification is made available for open registration to anyone who wishes to attempt it as a Challenge Certification. Other GIAC certifications will be available as Challenge Certifications soon. Watch for announcements on the website when they are added.
Registering for Challenge Certification
To register for a Challenge, complete the online registration form at https://www.sans.org/registration/register.php?conferenceid=1251.
The registration fee for full GIAC Certifications is $899 USD. The challenge registration fee for GIAC STARs that correspond to SANS one or two day training courses is $125 USD. There is an alumni rate for students that have previously taken the specific SANS training for the certification or STAR they want to challenge. For example, if you previously took SANS Security Essentials through any of the SANS training programs (conference, online training, Local Mentor program, Instructor Led Online Training) you would be eligible for the discounted fee for the GSEC Challenge. The alumni rate for full certifications is $749 USD. The alumni rate for STAR is $75 USD.
Please email info@giac.org to obtain a discount code for registration. You must include the information on when, where, and through what venue you participated in the previous training. Please be sure to obtain the discount code before you register. Discounts cannot be applied to registrations that have already been submitted.
General Instructions
- GIAC Silver certifications require one proctored exam.
- Exams are taken online via the GIAC web site and administered in a proctored environment. For complete details regarding the GIAC Proctor Program please see http://www.giac.org/proctor/.
- If you pass your exam, you will be GIAC certified.
