About ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024 Accreditation

Fully enacted on April 1, 2003, this international standard (ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024) was designed to harmonize the personnel certification process worldwide and create a more cost-effective global standard for workers. ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024, officially entitled "General Requirements for Bodies Operating Certification Systems of Persons," plays a prominent role in facilitating global standardization of the certification community, enhancing consistency, and protecting consumers.

GIAC provides information security certifications for IT managers and security professionals.

The Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC) was founded in 1999 to validate the real-world skills of IT security professionals. GIAC's purpose is to provide assurance that a certified individual has practical awareness, knowledge and skills in key areas of computer and network and software security. GIAC currently offers certifications for over 20 job-specific responsibilities that reflect the current practice of information security. GIAC is unique in measuring specific knowledge areas instead of general purpose information security knowledge.

See why GIAC certification matters.

GIAC certifications cover four IT/IT Security job disciplines:

There is no particular order in which GIAC certifications must be earned, however we recommend that candidates take a training course to better prepare themselves for each exam. As an individual progresses through the different tracks, he or she can achieve Silver, Gold, and Platinum levels of GIAC certification.

GIAC Silver: Silver certification requires passing one proctored exam. GIAC Silver assures that an individual has learned the practical real-world skills covered by his certification. For example, if you want to hire someone who knows how to properly secure a firewall, a GCFW Silver certification holder would be a good candidate for the job.

GIAC Gold: Gold certification represents deeper knowledge of the subject area, and requires candidates to research and write a detailed technical report or white paper. Candidates work closely with an advisor while developing their technical report. Once complete, the report is reviewed for acceptance into the GIAC Reading Room and the student earns the GIAC Gold level of certification. GIAC Gold certification shows that not only has an individual mastered the subject area, but that they are also qualified to research and share their knowledge with others.

GIAC Platinum: Our highest level of certification has three GIAC Silver certs as a prerequisite. Testing is given once a year and takes three days. Mastery of several areas of knowledge is required to receive a platinum certification. The test assesses specific real-world skills to ensure that the individual is ready to confront various information security threats on multiple levels. The platinum test includes individual and group hands-on computer security exercises, individual presentations, group presentations, research and essay assignments, and 12 hours of multiple choice and scenario-based exams.

GIAC security certifications offer a complete suite of security certifications that follows every step of a security professional's career, from entry level positions, through IT security administration, and even management and senior-level executive responsibilities. GIAC certifications related to software security are now available for software developers and programmers.
